MATTIE GARRISON

Mattie Garrison, 84, of Atlanta, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, in a Texarkana hospital.
She was born Sept. 9, 1933, in San Felipe, to Willie and Mary Jones. She was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church and a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, quilting, babysitting children and spending time with her kids and grandkids. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Garrison; two brothers, Willie and Kenneth Jones.
She is survived by a son, James Roy Garrison Jr.of Galveston; one daughter, Carolyn Vernon and husband Paul of Texarkana; seven grandchildren, Jason Frazier and wife Frances, William Garrison and wife Krista, Jennifer Katz and husband Marty, Nicole Vernon and spouse Blair, Emily Balson and husband Josh, Heather Vernon, Greg Wood; nine great-grandchildren, Julian Frazier, Mason Frazier, Cayli Trent, Madison Katz, Kimberly Frazier, Rebekah Frazier, Marlowe Vernon, Jack Balson and Dak Garrison,
Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Hanner Funeral Service.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the Piney Grove Baptist Church with Bro. Tony Lawson officiating. Interment will follow at Laws Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service.

Michael Jones, 53, of Bivins, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018, at his residence.
He was born March 12, 1964, in Dallas, to Jimmy and June Jones. He was a Baptist by faith.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jimmy Jones.
He is survived by his mother, June Jones of Bivins; a brother, David Jones of Orange Grove.
Graveside services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Bethsaida “Y” Cemetery under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service with Bro. Paul Murdock officiating.

Janell Green, 74, of Atlanta, went to be with the Lord Friday, Feb. 16, 2018, at her residence.
She was born Nov. 25, 1943, in Atlanta, to Clyde and Jewel Williams. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ in Atlanta.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Billy Wayne Williams.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Green of Atlanta; son, Russell Green of Atlanta; daughter, Bronda Barnes and husband Marlen of Atlanta; brother, James Williams of Atlanta; three grandchildren, Brandon Jester of Atlanta, Ryan Barnes and wife Melanie of Texarkana and Brittany Green of Hughes Springs; seven great-grandchildren, Makayla Jester, Allanah Jester, Gabby Jester, Bentley Barnes, Aubrey Barnes, Zane Huggins and Jenson Kirkpatrick; and a number of other relatives.
Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at Hanner Funeral Service.

Vera Fike, 82, of Atlanta, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018 at her residence.
She was born May 7, 1935, in Queen City, to Alex and Perline Powell. She was a homemaker and Baptist by faith. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, embroidering and working in her yard.
She was preceded in death by her husband, R. E. Fike; son, Robert Fike; daughters, Martha Nottingham and Lillie Fike; and her parents and several siblings.
She is survived by three daughters, Dian Fike of Atlanta, Fay Jones and husband Kenneth of Fouke, Ark., and Bonnie Latham and husband J.W. of Leary; three brothers, Robert Powell of Atlanta, Jamie Powell of Queen City and Carl Powell of Daingerfield; three sisters, Decie Jackson of Queen City, Ella Alexander of Naples and Kathryn Garrett of Hallsville; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives.
There will be viewing from 1 to 5 p.m. at Sunday, Feb. 18 at Hanner Funeral Service.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 19, in the Hanner Funeral Chapel with Bro. Lonnie Jones officiating. Interment followed at Courtland Cemetery under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service.

LARRY LAUNIUS

Larry Launius, 75, of Doddridge, Ark., went to be with the Lord Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018, in a Tyler hospital.
He was born Feb. 27, 1942, in Manning, Ark., to Cecil and Iva Mae Launius. He was retired from International Paper and a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time with family; farming; hunting and tinkering.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Pamela McCreery; and his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Pat Launius of Doddridge; two sons, Keith Launius and wife Paula of Cave Springs, Ark., and Launius and wife Angie of Texarkana; two brothers, Tom Launius of Fouke, Ark., Bob Launius of Camden, Ark.; two sisters, Kate Carter of Monticello, Ark., and Betty Wilkins of Sparkman, Ark.; six grandchildren, Jessica Gray, Whitney Basinger, Kyla Mahoney, Haiden Tenpenny, Conor Launius and Hannah Launius; three great-grandchildren, Luke Gray, Everleigh Gray and  Avery Tenpenny; and a number of other relatives.

Betty Virginia Brooks Steed, 86, of Atlanta, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018.
She was born Feb.15, 1931, in Choudrant, La., to Elton and Mary Lou Taunton Brooks. She graduated from Greenwood High School and Meadows Draughon Business College. She was a member of the Piney Grove Baptist Church. She worked for Prudential Insurance Company for 14 years as Associate Office Manager. After moving to Oklahoma, she worked for a drug store and Dowd’s Insurance Agency.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles E. Steed Sr.; son, Bennie E. Steed; grandson, Bennie E. Steed Jr.; brother, Bennie Wallace Brooks; sisters, Marjorie Rockett, Mildred Boley and Mary Beth Wright.
She is survived by her son, Charles E. Steed Jr.; grandsons, James Edward Steed and wife Kaitrina, Charles Wallace Steed and wife Amy and Michael Steed and wife Rosemary; great-grandchildren, Seth, Payton, Vanessa, Brooklyn, Zachary, Nolan, Logan, Wyatt, Ashton, Samuel, Zander and Tristen; nephews, Louie B. Rockett, Randy Brooks, Phillip Feibel; and a niece, Susan Lentz.
Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at Hanner Funeral Service.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Bethsaida “Y” Cemetery under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service with Bro. Tony Lawson officiating.

BYRON RICHARD SIMMONS

Byron Richard Simmons, 83, of Marshall, formerly of Linden, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018.
He was born Dec. 30, 1934, in Linden to Luther and Ruby Jones Simmons. He graduated from Linden-Kildare High School in 1953, and had great affection for his fellow classmates. He started working for Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) part time while attending East Texas Baptist College in Marshall. He was proud to have served his country in the U. S. Army, spending most of his service time in Okinawa. After his military service, he returned to work for SWEPCO, retiring after 41 years of service.
While attending East Texas Baptist College, he met and married Doris Owen, who came from Old Hickory, Tenn., to attend college.
He was a member of Central Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and greeter. He loved “playing” in the woods in Linden splitting many pieces of firewood and clearing brush. He thoroughly enjoyed attending blue grass festivals and civil war battlefields and museums.
Byron was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Ruby Simmons.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris; daughter, Judy Owen and husband Robert; son, Richard Simmons and wife Mary; granddaughters Rheanna Branch and husband James, Allison Austin and husband David and AnnaBeth Simmons; great-granddaughter, Makenna Branch; great-grandson, Hunter Branch; brothers, William Simmons of Manchester, Tenn., and James Simmons of Linden; a sister, Martha Williams of Linden.
The family expresses sincere appreciation to those who provided loving care at Marshall Manor and CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Hospital. “Byron is smiling down on you now.”
Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15at Downs Funeral Home.

Daryl “Darbyl” Lynn Vincent, 68, of Linden, loving husband and father, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018.
He was born Nov. 24, 1949, in Glasgow, Ky., to James Curtis Vincent and Thelma Inez Vincent. He graduated from high school in Pendelton, Ind., in 1968, and attended Ball State University from 1968-1970. He owned and operated a chimney sweep business in Canada for 25 years. He and his wife have lived in our community for 25 years and are the owners of the New Colony Flea Market. He enjoyed playing the flute, antiques and spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, James Cooper; brother-in-law, Charlie Cooper; sister-in-law, Rhonda Hestand; and sister, Shelia Vincent.
He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Robbin Vincent of Linden; his two sons, Cody Vincent of Linden and Tyler Vincent of Linden; sister, Teresa Vincent Rochester of Florida; mother-in-law, Delarece Viola Cooper; brother-in-law, Brad Cooper and wife Chondra; several nieces, nephews and a host of special friends.
He was a dedicated and loving husband and father to his special needs sons. He made the decision to accept the Lord as his Savior near the end of his life. This decision gave him the courage he would need to fight a very aggressive cancer which spread quickly. The kindness and generosity of the community also gave him the strength to fight this terrible disease.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at New Colony Baptist Church with Bro. Claude Crocker officiating. Interment followed at New Colony Cemetery under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service.

BONNIE OGBURN DUPREE
March 5, 1946 - Feb. 10, 2018
Bonnie Ogburn Dupree, 71, of Atlanta, passed from this life Sunday, Feb. 10, 2018, at her residence. She was born March 5, 1946, in Texarkana, Ark.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Pat and Mildred Ogburn; her stepmother, Gertie Ogburn; and a sister, Betty Boze.
She is survived by her daughter, Danielle Dupree of Atlanta; brother-in-law, Ray Boze of Bloomburg; nephews, Caroll Boze and wife Tammy of Bloomburg, Harold Boze and wife Elaine of Doyline, La., and Raymond Boze; her best friend, Glenda Sullivan; and a number of other relatives.
Her love of antiques and a desire to make a better life for her daughter led to a position managing Yesterday’s Antique Mall in Atlanta. She eventually purchased the business, which she ran for decades before retiring. She was a Methodist and was known for her great sense of humor.
Visitation was from 1:20 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at the United Methodist Church of Doddridge, Ark. 
Funeral services were at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15 at the United Methodist Church of Doddridge. Interment followed at Mount Zion Cemetery in Doddridge under the direction of Queen City Funeral Home.
