Player of the Year

5-year-old Alex Hammonds achieves historic status

A little over a year ago Alex Hammonds, the 5-year-old son of Derek and Rae Hammonds of Atlanta, sank his first hole-in-one at the Texarkana Golf Ranch from 68 yards out.
The “Guinness Book of World Records” logged in a child of 4 years and 195 days old hitting an ace in 1999 -- and at that time, Alex was exactly 4 years and 67 days old.
It also happened to be the same hole that his father Derek hit his first ace.
Fast forward a year and Alex has now set another historic feat for the record books of the Ark-La-Tex Golf Tour.
Alex was slotted in the 7 to 9 year-old co-ed division and by tour’s end was named Player of the Year.
Alex took home the honor after winning five of the seven tournaments he played in and finishing second in the two he didn’t win.
Tour Director Dick Williams said that although Alex is five and stands at 3 feet, 8 inches he strikes the ball well and is extremely talented.
Alex’s scoring average was 46.6 against 7 to 9 year-old players, and to date he’s the first 5 year old to play on the tour in its 34-year history.
He even got a chance to play with dad during one of the tournaments. The Hammonds duo won the tourney with a solid score of 30.
Alex is under the guidance of his father Derek but his favorite player to follow is Jordan Spieth.
Alex says he wants to win a green jacket after winning the Masters Tournament when he grows up, and drink from the coveted Claret Jug after winning The Open Championship.
When asked what he would drink out of the jug he replied, “milk, sprite or skittles.”
The Ark-La-Tex Junior Golf Tour is an organization based on Christian principals with emphasis on honesty, integrity and ethics.
The Tour is designed for boys and girls from age seven through college eligibility, with the purpose of focusing on a basic desire to help learn the game of golf from a competitive point of view.
